Fitzpatrick had the year of his life in 2013. He ended the summer as winner of the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the leading player on the World Amateur Golf Ranking. That accolade came after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. He defeated Australia’s Oliver Goss to become the first Englishman to win the title since Harold Hilton in 1911. Fitzpatrick also picked up the silver medal as leading amateur in the Open Championship at Muirfield. He was runner-up in the English Amateur Championship and represented Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup. He enrolled at Northwestern University in September, but quit at Christmas to return home to Sheffield. In 2012 he won the British Boys’ Championship by defeating Welshman Henry James 10&9.
