Webb Simpson of Wake Forest University, NC continued his ascent of The R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking, moving up 5 places to No 3 by winning the 101st Southern Amateur at the Country Club of North Carolina, Pinehurst. The field of 74 featured four of the world’s top 20 amateurs, with Simpson heading the field by one courtesy of a 68 in each of his final rounds, posting a 16 under total of 272. The young American, who missed out on the last USA Eisenhower Trophy team through injury, held off the challenge of World No 58 Tom Glissmeyer (USA), who shot a 9 under par 63 on the final day to miss out by one stroke and tie for second with
World No 53 Seung Su Han (Korea).
Spain’s Jorge Campillo moved up 7 places into the top 50 (No 45) courtesy of his win at the Biarritz Cup in France. Rounds of 67, 67, 68, 64 were enough to see Campillo post a 10 under par total of 266. The Spaniard won by two shots from Frenchman Xavier Poncelet.
