Billy Horschel of the United States struck the first ball of the 2007 Walker Cup match at Royal County Down in the opening foursomes and he and partner Rickie Fowler moved smartly to a two-up lead over the GB&I pairing of Lloyd Saltman and Rhys Davies after four holes.
The home pair dropped a shot at the third to go one behind and the Americans doubled their advantage with a birdie at the 213-yard fourth.
In the second match local boy Rory McIlroy and his fellow Irishman Jonathan Caldwell, lost the first to an American birdie, but hit back immedaietly with a birdie of their own at the second. They exchanged the following two holes to remain all square against Colt Knost and Dustin Johnson.
Trip Kuehne and Kyle Stanley for the United States moved one ahead of John Parry and David Horsey with a birdie at the second and in the bottom match Jamie Moul and Daniel Willett took advantage of a poor start by Webb Simpson and Jonathan Moore to be two up after two, winning both holes with par figures.
