Matteo Manassero’s phenomenal year continued in Week 45 with a Gold Medal at The Spirit International Amateur. He and team-mate Andrea Pavan captured the men’s team title for Italy, finishing six shots ahead of nearest challengers, Korea, on 27 under par at the conclusion of the four-round, better-ball event.
Manassero, the reigning Amateur Champion and Open Championship Silver Medalist, remains at number two in the Ranking. Pavan, meanwhile, advances three places to WAGRank 26.
Winner of the men’s individual Gold Medal at The Spirit was Bum-Geun Chae, who clocked up an impressive 20 birdies over the course of the tournament, held at the par-72, 7,470-yard Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas, USA. Amongst players ranked significantly higher than him, the young Korean performed exceptionally well and is duly rewarded with a 103-place leap to WAGRank 867.
Elsewhere, Australia’s Daniel Nisbet posted a final-round, six-under-par 66 to win the Hong Kong Amateur Championship at Discovery Bay Golf Club. His eight-under-par total of 280 gave the 19-year-old a two-stroke victory over nearest rival and 2008 champion, Mhark Fernando.
Nisbet, who is up seven to 43rd in the Ranking, will now take his place in the starting field at the UBS Hong Kong Open along with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Robert Karlsson and YE Yang.
Finally, Zack Fischer earned his second career collegiate victory, and his first of the season, at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate. A five-under-par 67 in the final round was enough to take the title by two-strokes from Ken Looper of New Orleans and Louisiana-Lafayette’s Andrew Noto. Fischer is up 54 places this week to 135th.
France’s Victor Dubuisson remains WAGR Number One.
