25-year-old Gavin Dear goes into this weekend’s Walker Cup Match as the 2009 Scottish Golfer of the Year after finishing as Scotland’s leading player according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The current Irish Open Amateur Champion, who has been ranked as high as 12th was announced as the recipient of the accolade by the Scottish Golf Union yesterday (Thursday).
A member of Scotland's winning side at both this year's European Amateur Championship and last year's World Amateur Team Championship, Dear has enjoyed a sustained period of success at the highest levels of the amateur game this year. He won this year's Craigmillar Park Open, finished second at the Scottish Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship was a Spanish Amateur semi-finalist.
Importantly, from a Walker Cup perspective, Dear has also proved himself on American soil, winning the Dixie Amateur early in the season.
He is certain to be an asset to the Great Britain and Ireland team.
